Smart tips to keep your toddler hydrated this summer

5 smart ways to keep your toddler hydrated this summer

As the temperatures rise, keeping your little one properly hydrated is essential. Toddlers are particularly susceptible to dehydration due to their small body size and high activity levels. Here are some smart strategies to ensure your child is getting the hydration they need.

  1. Always have water on hand

Water should be your toddler’s primary source of hydration. Keep a sippy cup or water bottle filled with fresh water easily accessible throughout the day. Encourage regular sips, especially when they are playing outdoors. To add a little flavour to water, fill an ice tray with Squish 100% Fruit Juice then place in the freezer overnight. Pop a couple of cubes into your child’s sippy cup when you’re heading out to keep it cooler for longer and to add a fruity flavour. Squish 100% Fruit Juice is made using only fresh fruit and contains no added sugar. Choose from Squish 100% Apple Juice, Apple + Grape Juice with Rooibos Extract, Pear + Prune Juice and Summer Berries.

  1. Make it into a game

Use a sticker chart or a special cup with markings to track water intake. This can turn hydration into a game and motivate your child to drink more.

  1. Offer hydrating foods

Many fruits and vegetables have high water content, making them excellent choices for hydration. Watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and oranges are not only refreshing but also packed with nutrients. Incorporate these into your toddler’s meals and snacks and serve with a dip to encourage your child to tuck in. You can create a sweet dip for fruit by stirring Squish 100% Fruit Puree into some plain yoghurt, or create a savoury dip for vegetables by add Squish 100% Veg Puree to smooth cottage cheese. You can also try this delicious Beany Dip for added protein.

  1. Create fun ice treats

Little ones love lollies, and the good news is that if you make them yourself, they can be delicious and hydrating without being packed full of artificial sugars. For the simplest lollies, try this quick and easy way to make Squish Popsicles using Squish 100% Fruit Juice, or this Smoothie Lollies recipe using Squish 100% Yogi Fruit Medley. Squish 100% Fruit and Veg Purees are made using only the best fresh fruit and vegetables and contain no nasties. They are free of preservatives, colourants and flavourants and have no added sugar or starch.

  1. Be a role model

Toddlers love to mimic their parents and older siblings. Make a point of drinking water regularly in front of your toddler and explain to them why you do it and how your body needs fluids. Your positive example can encourage them to follow suit.
