Tips to prepare for a day out with baby during winter

During winter, heading out with a baby in tow can feel daunting. With a little prep and these smart tips, you and your little one can brave the outdoors when necessary, and stay warm, dry and protected even during rainy days.

1.Layer up

Dress your baby in breathable layers so that you can remove or add layers easily if the weather fluctuates. Try to avoid very bulky clothing – while it might be warm and suited for cold weather, your baby will feel uncomfortable if they can’t move easily. The key is to keep their body temperature consistent as you go from place to place, and removable layers are the best way to do this as you move between indoor and outdoor environments. Keep their ears covered with a cap or a beany – and don’t forget to carry an umbrella in case it rains.

2. Baby carrying for the win!

If it is raining and you need to run quick errands with your baby in tow, carry your baby in a baby carrier. Body contact with you will help keep them warm, and it is much easier to move around easily and keep your baby covered when your hands are free. If you prefer to use a pram, ensure that the pram has a rain cover to protect your baby from getting wet while you’re out and about.

3. Take spares

Pack a change of clothing for your little one in case of an accident or spill – you’ll need everything from vests through to baby grows and a warm jacket. Choose clothes with poppers and shoes with Velcro so that changes can be done quickly and easily. You’ll also want to make sure you have more than enough nappies and wipes – and if your baby is dribbling a lot include at least three bibs so you can keep their clothes dry. If possible, take an extra top for yourself too – just in case.

4. Get the timing right

Try to time your outing well so that you’re heading out soon after your baby’s nap time. Also keep an eye on the weather so that you can avoid heading out when there is going to be heavy rainfall. If you will be out for a while, take their favourite blankets or pillows to ensure you can create a cosy space where they will feel comfortable sleeping when you’re out too.

5. Pack meals and snacks

A hungry baby is a miserable baby, so make sure you pack snacks and meals to keep them satisfied throughout the day. Squish 100% Fruit and Veg Purees come in convenient pouches that are great for days out. They are designed to be the perfect portion size and fit easily into a handbag, backpack, or nappy bag – plus there is a whole range of flavours to choose from, including veggie, fruit and yoghurt combos. Squish pouches come with a resealable lid so you can use what you need and then close it up to use later in the day. You’ll also find plenty of inspiration for great snacks you can prep ahead and pack in a lunchbox here, like these Mini Banana Muffins and Veggie Fritters.

6. Don’t forget drinks

When the weather is cold it can be easy to forget that babies need consistent hydration – so remember to pack enough fluids like water, milk and nourishing juices. Squish 100% Fruit Juices have no preservatives, colourants and artificial flavours and come in convenient 200ml boxes – perfect for little toddler hands to hold.  Choose between Summer Berry, Apple, Pear + Prune, or Apple + Grape

7. Plan ahead

Don’t overdo it. Being out can be very stimulating for your baby as they are surrounded by new sights and sounds. Be realistic about your expectations of how much you are able to do on a day out if you have your baby with you. When running errands, decide on the places you need to visit before you go out and visit only those. That way you’ll have a productive trip and limit your baby’s time out in the cold.
